Bulgan Mountain Bike Trail 2016
2nd - 10th August 2016 only GBP £1295 (We accept other major currencies)
In 2016 we will be running this exciting cycle route in the provinces of Bulgan and Selenge, south of the border with Siberia. We travel by train from Ulaanbaatar to the start of the trail at the copper mining city of Erdenet. The mountains, forests, rivers and valleys we ride through are remote, inhabited only by nomadic families with their herds of animals. Towards the end of the trail, when we still feel as though we are in the middle of nowhere, we suddenly come upon the fantastic Amarbayasgalant monastery. It was built in the early 18th century during the period of Manchu domination, and is one of the largest and best Buddhist monasteries in the country.
Train to Erdenet
The overnight train from Ulaanbaatar to Erdenet is quite comfortable with sleeping compartments and plenty of space for luggage. This is a relaxing way to cover the distance to the start point of the ride and the tour crew will be waiting to meet you at Erdenet railway station.
The mountains and valleys of Bulgan province in northern Mongolia are fertile, partly forested, and home to many nomadic families with their herds of horses, sheep and goats. Cycling through this beautiful scenery is a wonderful way to escape from a busy Western lifestyle.
The Selenge river is the largest river in Mongolia; 992 km long, it flows northwards into Lake Baikal in Siberia. The Selenge river basin is an important region for arable agriculture and as we ride through the valleys you will notice that the semi-nomadic people have worked hard to grow crops.
Amarbayasgalant Monastery is located in the valley of the Even River, in Selenge Aimag, Built in the 1730s in honor of Zanabazar, the first Bogd Gegen (1635-1723), it was largely destroyed by the communists in 1937, but it has been restored beautifully.
During 5 days cycling we cover a distance of approximately 300km, mainly on rough jeep tracks (but classed as 98% off-road). There are river crossings, mountain passes and long grassy valleys, with a few technical sections. The trail is suitable for riders of some experience and is graded moderate. However, there is full vehicle support, so riders with less experience can always get a lift if necessary.

Mountain Biking Tour Video
BikeMongolia started in 1998 doing mountain bike tours, so we've been doing this kind of trip the longest. We've arranged some fantastic trips in remote and beautiful parts of Mongolia and have organised some large group cycling challenge events to raise money for charity. Cycling is the best way to view Mongolia and Mongolian people are really delighted that tourists would come and enjoy their country under their own steam.
