In 2008 we will be running this exciting new cycle route in the
provinces of Bulgan and Selenge, south of the border with Siberia.
We travel by train from Ulaanbaatar to the start of the trail
at the copper mining city of Erdenet. The mountains, forests,
rivers and valleys we ride through are remote, inhabited only
by nomadic families with their herds of animals. Towards the end
of the trail, when we still feel as though we are in the middle
of nowhere, we suddenly come upon the fantastic Amarbayasgalant
monastery. It was built in the early 18th century during the period
of Manchu domination, and is one of the largest and best Buddhist
monasteries in the country.
During 5 days cycling we cover a distance of 280km, mainly on
rough jeep tracks (but classed as 100% off-road). There are river
crossings, mountain passes and long grassy valleys, with a few
technical sections. The trail is suitable for riders of some experience
and is graded moderate. However, there is full vehicle support,
so riders with less experience can always get a lift if necessary.
