Motorcycle Tour Mongolia

Gobi Khangai Off-Road

Gobi Desert & Khangai Mountain Off-Road Motorcycle Tour 7th - 16th June 2008

This exciting off-road adventure motorcycle tour in Mongolia is a chance to see a variety of unusual landscapes including the infamous Gobi Desert, the remote Khangai mountains,  and Kharkhorin in the Orkhon valley which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a wonderful way to experience Central Asia.

This circular route of nearly 1500km will be a challenge,  since Mongolian roads are actually just rough tracks and only the last  leg back to Ulaanbaatar is black-topped. However, it is sure to be an exhilarating experience, lots of fun, and a fascinating insight into the ancient culture of Central Asia’s nomadic population.

Day By Day Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrive Ulaanbaatar for the start of your motor bike trip in Mongolia. Transfer to hotel in the city center. It is only a few minutes walk from Sukhbaatar Square and all the important buildings and restaurants.

Day 2 Set off on your motorbike trail in Mongolia, heading for Overkhangai province. The space is vast and the air so clear that you can often see 50km or more in every direction. We overnight at a spectacular place where the ger camp lies at the foot of a picturesque granite mountain.

Day 3 Ride southwards and through the town of Arvaikheer. Continue along the northern edge of the Gobi Desert where the vegetation is sparse and the life for the nomadic people is harsh. Overnight camping.

Day 4 Continue motorbiking west to Bayankhongor town. The tracks are dry and rocky as we head up into the Khangai mountains, second highest range in Mongolia. Crossing over a couple of reasonably gentle mountain passes, we set up camp in a remote valley.

Day 5 We continue motorcycling through increasingly remote and wild scenery up to the highest pass at an altitude of nearly 2800 meters. This stretch of road is the most challenging of the whole off road motorbike trip in Mongolia, with boulder-strewn dry river beds and deep river crossings.

Day 6 The landscape becomes a little gentler with green meadows and forested mountainsides. After several tough mountain passes we ride the motorbikes to Tsetserleg town. Head off over the recently improved mountain road to reach a ger camp beside a river.

Day 7 Ride to Kharkhorin across the open rolling hills. Visit Erdene Zuu monastery built on the site where Genghis Khan established his military headquarters. Overnight ger camp.

Day 8 Return to Ulaanbaatar. Some of this section of the road has been black-topped, but in other places the track is dusty and rough. Overnight hotel.

Day 9 Free day in Ulaanbaatar to enjoy the museums, temples, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Overnight hotel.

Day 10 Transfer to airport for departure.

Price per person: Euro €1395
plus motorbike hire: Euros 100 per day
