The Valley of Genghis Khan Trail

This is a suggestion for a tailor-made tour which we can run for groups of 4 or more people, at dates of your choice.

This 200km circular route starts and finishes at Kharkhorin which was the of the great Mongol empire ruled by Genghis Khan. It passes along the Orkhon river valley which has a rich history as the of several kingdoms dating back more than a , and continues onwards through varied mountain, forest and open steppe scenery. The volcanic rocky ground near the Orkhon waterfall are most dramatic.

The riding is 100% off road, following rough jeep tracks most of the way, with a number of river crossings. The highest point is at 2000 meters. It is a part of Mongolia rarely seen by tourists so there are no facilities and we will camp in tents most nights.

		Independent tailor-made tour

	Day 1	Arrive Ulaanbaatar
	Day 2	Jeep to Khogno Khan. Hike on the Mountain.
	Day 3	Visit Erdene Zuu Buddhist monastery.
	Day 4	Bike to Tsenkher hot springs.
	Day 5	Bike over Bogooch pass.
	Day 6	Bicycle over Ultiin Davaa pass.
	Day 7	Cycle along the Orkhon valley to the waterfall.
	Day 8	Bike past Batulzii village.
	Day 9	Continue cycling to reach Kharkhorin town.
	Day 10	Free day for mountain biking around Kharkhorin.
	Day 11	Jeep to Ulaanbaatar.
	Day 12	Depart.

Tour Grading

		Beginners Has good runs for first timers, reasonable surfaces and no difficult technical sections. Not too much uphill.
		Intermediates Great terrain for intermediates with some technical downhill's, longs slow uphill's and rocky sections.
		Advanced Has some steep hills and challenging sections requiring experience and cycling skill.

Along the way...

• Tsenkher hot springs

The sulphur springs at Tsenkher emerge from the ground at 86 ° C. In the olden days (during the Communist era) cucumbers and tomatoes were grown in greenhouses here.

• Airag and local vodka

Fresh mare's milk is fermented to produce "airag", which is drunk in great quantity during the summer months. Airag can be distilled to make "shimiin arkhi" which is quickly intoxicating.

• Orkhon Waterfall

The 20 meter high waterfall was created by volcanic activity 20,000 years ago. the surrounding landscape is carpeted with black volcanic rocks.
