An off-road motorcycle tour through Mongolia's central provinces is the opportunity to see just what an amazing place this is. You can swim in the beautiful White Lake, climb the Khorgo Volcano and ride through the town of Kharkhorin which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a great way to experience Central Asia, but you need some off-road experience. |
Taikhir chuluu is a mysterious steep-sided pinnacle of granite, 25 meters high, rising abruptly from the flat grassland of the gravel spreads of the Tamir river. There is no agreement amongst geologists on the origin of this puzzling phenomenon and the pinnacle remains an enigma.
The volcano is located on the east shore of the White Lake. From its summit, which is covered in sacred ovoo, there are splendid views over the whole region and the lake. It was once a favourite holiday place for the Politburo members of the communist era.
This 25 square kilometer lake attracts a large number of migratory birds such as swan goose, white spoonbill and dalmatian pelican. The water is rich in perch and pike and good for fishing.
The Gobi Desert of Outer Mongolia is one of the world's most exotic places. The big golden dunes are pretty much virgin sand except for the occasional trail of camel footprints. Ride over 1500 km to see Mongolia's Painted Desert as well as the valley where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first nest of dinosaur eggs. 
Genghis Khan was born in Dadal in 1162. Riding mainly off-road across remote mountains and river valleys, it is 600 km from Ulaanbaatar to the village where the great leader of the Mongol Empire was born 800 years ago.
